It’s OK to Say “Happy Thanksgiving,” “Merry Christmas,” Happy New Year.”

Two elderly have been friends for a long time. From younger days, they shared many occasions, adventures and travels. Lately their activities have been limited to playing cards once a week. One day as they were seated at table, the first one said, “I hope you don’t get mad, but for the life of me, I just can’t remember your name. Can you remind me what your name is?” The other one, stared blankly at her for three minutes and finally said, “How soon do you want to know?”

Age. notwithstanding, it is human nature to “get and forget.” That is why special events are designed to make us remember. They are like milestones which tell us how far we have gone. Birthdays, anniversaries, July 4th, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year. They all have specific significance in our life individually and corporately. They help up recall they the times of giving, remembering and forgiving. That is why it is too dismissive to simply say, “Happy Holidays.”

This month of December, St. Michael and All Angels clergy and faithful will be wearing buttons which says, “It’s OK to Say ‘Merry Christmas.’” It’s the least we can do to bear witness to God who became one of us in Jesus Christ. It’s the least we can do to help bring the Good News of great joy about the birth of Jesus, our Savior and Lord.
